What is Low Anterior Resection Syndrome (LARS)?

A low anterior resection is a surgical removal of part of the colon or rectum to remove cancerous cells or to treat another gastrointestinal or abdominal condition. This necessary surgery may result in low anterior resection syndrome, also known as LARS. When the surgeon performs an anastomosis to rejoin the large intestine and the rectum, it results in a shorter colon, which leads to the symptoms that make up LARS.
